Hybrid heating is the perfect solution

Hybrid heating is the perfect solution

To handle the severe temperature swings in my local area, I chose a hybrid heating system. The combination of a heat pump and gas furnace is more expensive to purchase and install than the more traditional pairing of an air conditioner and a furnace. However, the energy savings makes the added cost worth it. I save enough on my utility bills over the course of the year to quickly recover the investment. The advantage of a hybrid heating system is that the heat pump provides both heating and cooling. Just like an air conditioner, it uses refrigerant to draw heat out of the home and send it outside. However, a heat pump can switch to heating mode and reverse the flow of refrigerant. Even when the air is cold, there is ambient heat available. The heat pump uses this heat, compresses it to a higher temperature and provides a comfortable living space. By taking advantage of existing heat, the heat pump eliminates the burning of fossil fuels. WIth no combustion process, the operation is especially environmentally friendly. It’s also wonderfully energy efficient and costs a lot less to run than the furnace. The heat pump doesn’t overly dry out the air or create greenhouse gasses. There are no concerns over carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide or harmful fumes. When the outdoor temperature drops below freezing, the heat pump becomes less effective. It struggles to keep up with demand. With a hybrid system, the furnace automatically takes over and handles comfort for as long as necessary. In my local area, with temperature swings from negative twenty to the high eighties, a hybrid heating system is the perfect solution.
